Life in the slow lane: Byron Bay day 2

13th November 2010

As Sir Isaac Newton has been famously quoted saying "What goes up must come down" in regards to his theory of gravity.

Now in Byron there are many walks - one such walk is the lighthouse walk we you can walk up to, walk down from or do a circular up and down walk. Now Sir Isaac Newton's theory wasn't at the forefront of my mind when we ventured up in our Jucy crib to the Lighthouse but it sure came rushing in when we we're on our decent towards Little Watego Point via "Australia's most eastern point." A word of warning here, even the fit people were struggling in the early part of the day climbing up the hill from the bottom, so if you do have bad knees or any major health issues stay at the most easterly point and leave the steep climb down to Little Watego Point and the steep climb back up. Having said that it is definitely worth the trek down and up again.

Once we hiked back up the hill to the top we grabbed an ice cool refreshment from the Lighthouse cafe before heading towards Suffolk Park, Lennox head and to the Lennox head lookout, where on the way we spied some flying birds of the non feather variety.

We moved on towards Shaw's Park and a spot of lunch at the local pub "Shawsy".

This is in a beautiful spot and a nice place to have lunch on the river. There are even two caravan parks close by one next to "Shawy's" and another across the river. We were on our way to Ballina and in search of the now closed "Big Prawn" renamed by me as the "Raw Prawn" - it was looking a little shabby and drawn from the sun and was also now sporting some graffiti.

Not too sure if the words "Tourist Complex" under the 'Big Raw Prawn' meant it now has a complex in regards to tourists, that tourist are complex or it still is a tourist complex but given that big wired fencing was all around, it was being refurbished and the prawn was looking washed out then as far as being a tourist complex it has ceased.

So what has Ballina to offer - well it has a very nice RSL in which we decided to have a drink before moving on.

Even their prawns looked more healthy than the "Big Prawn" up the road! Once refreshed we drove onwards towards Lismore. Now Lismore isn't a small town, it's quite large and you would think on a Saturday arvo that it would be bustling but when we rode into town, I kept waiting for the tumble weed to roll across the streets and the tune of  'the good, the bad and the ugly' to strike up followed by Clint Eastwood striding into the centre of the road and demanding we turn back before we get ourselves into trouble. It was like a ghost town, even the local Gay n Lesbian bar - 'Winsome Pub' all dried up and now the home to the homeless.

So we moved on out before Clint spied us and shot through our tyres. We carried on the road for a bit towards a place called Bangalow. This was a small picturesque place and more busier than Lismore. We stopped by a local creek and decided to stretch our legs and have a BBQ. We did spot one very oversized trailer.

Notes of affection were scrawled on the shelter over the picnic tables by the local youths along with other various obscenities about the Youth's name for the town. According to one local youth scrawl allegedly Phil did something unmentionable but none-the -less it made for a very interesting read.

We enjoyed our BBQ with dogs, ants and birds. We washed the plates before making the journey back to camp at Byron Bay. As we came into Byron we made a quick dash to the shops to top up supplies and gas bottles before another dip in the sea and a small chillax.

Night was upon us again and so off we went to experience Byron Bay at night once more. We gabbed a Pizza Puff from Domino's which was very scrummy before heading up to the grassy area by the sea to sit and eat. Here we sat and enjoyed a didgeridoo man play - I think it was Andy Holm of Byron Bay Cafe but definitely was the "funky didgeridoo guy' on you tube - who doesn't have a name. Whilst we sat enjoying the music a dog came over and nearly snatched my food but was actually quite happy to get some attention and be played with - he seemed to like chasing empty plastic cups.

We moved on after a while to see what other delights Byron was going to reveal tonight, we saw the sax man who was part of last nights Hippy Jazz girl jammin' session, we even went to the night market and chatted with some of the stall holders. Now the soy candle man massaged my hand with 'seduction' and asked
"what  are you doing later?",
"Funny you should ask ... Bed!" I said,
Raucous laughter was abound ...
"Oh good it's working!" he said with a wicked smile on his face
Raucous wicked laughter abounded again.
Next were some earrings from Sky Dive photoman before return home to our bed.
