Life in the slow lane: Byron Bay

12th November 2010 6am crack o stoopid again - ah well!

Woke up and decided to brew a cuppa by the sea at Lennox Head. We were joined by energetic Sand Trotting Boxers and surfing Nippers. Once consumed we retreated back to Byron Bay and booked a park at the First Sun Holiday Park http://firstsunholidaypark.com.au/ Tel: (02) 6685-6544 $40 powered site AA Tourist Star Rating 4 stars/our rating 4 stars.

Facilities here are great and yes you are packed in tight, so backing in is the best option. Showers and toilet blocks are great, clean and tidy considering how close it is to the beach. Private beach access from the caravan park. Great camp kitchen with BBQ's and TV area all undercover.

Ideally located in Byron Town centre, so if you don't like noise best not stay here, as noise does carry from the various venues around the park area. There is no swimming pool as part of the camp site, however, glee shrieks can be heard every day coming from Byron's swimming pool set alongside the camp site. The beach is also just a quick jaunt down some stairs, so a swimming pool isn't necessary.

The only down point is due to its location if it's sunny it can get very hot, there is little shade from trees as the camp site lack these, save for a small strip of plants on one section. Whilst most people do have awnings or some shade retreats to get under, it should be noted that our Jucy campavan did not have such an awning and the only retreat from shade is in the van or finding another shady spot. The campavan can get hot and if your stationary the air con doesn't work not even off the second battery.

Stopping here allowed us to shower and wash clothes in the coin operated laundry - $4 for the washing machine and $4 for the dryer, we did a substantial load and spent only $8 in total, so whilst the cost may appear to be steep, it was actually very cost effective. Having the powered site but no need to power the van, we powered our mobile and camera battery here.

We also took the opportunity to empty the entire campavan and give it a good clean, including washing the sheets - boy did they need it. So we we're all clean and smelling great. Once the Jucy crib was cleaned and we were shinier than a new coin. We took a stroll down to the beach.

Whilst I was busy admiring the beauty and serenity of it all, someone sneaked off to buy an extra night at our campsite - woohoo 2 days in Happy Byron. I also spied something I had never seen before - Cicada shells just stuck to the trees.

Mind you was a tad concerned about swimming at the beach when I saw this sign ...

Even Barbara of Bank World would say, "You want to go swimming ... in there ... why would you? Of course if you do ... not my problem, should have read the small print!"

We decided to venture into Byron and have a Fish n Chip lunch by the sea. Byron is an interesting mix in the day of strolling tourist, cafe's, bars, tourists coming and going, souvenirs shops and some trendy places to have your cares to massage away. All in all a great place to come and chillax. We also bumped into our travelling Chilean friends who were leaving Byron after lunch.

We had Fish n Chips on the lawn area on Byron Bay beach front with all the other crowds of people, eating or swimming there. Once eaten we walked back to our Jucy little crib and made a quick change to go down to Belongil Beach - yup the one Barbara of Bank world wouldn't touch with a barge pole.

The water was so refreshing, especially after a warm day busy doing nothing but holidaying in Byron. We sat drying off for a while watching the surfers crash n burn on the waves or hanging on the water waiting for that one wave. The sea wasn't very yielding for the surfers. Returned back to our crib before showering and hand washing our swim clothes, then to chillax some more - I know hard life.

As dusk started appearing we finished off our noodles and headed into town for evening entertainment. Lights were shinning, the 'Blackbirds' (a group entertaining diners at the local restaurant) were singing, a Hippie Jazz girl band, even people dancing in the street, grabbing some Gelati on the way before spying a Byron Bride bopping to the latest sounds.

This is the dancing Byron Bride who thought she might end up on 'You Tube'

We even spied some amazing local graffiti ...

Once we had enjoyed the delights of Byron nightlife, we headed back to the crib for a cuppa before bed.
